Budbreak in 2024 came nearly a month earlier than in 2023. (Chris compares the two vintages to 1998 and 1999.) I love the nose on the 2024 Chardonnay Dundee Hills. Bright pale yellow in color, it opens with green pear, spearmint, flinty reduction, chalky nuttiness, lime zest, and lemon. Full-bodied yet vertical and long, it has outstanding salinity, vibrant energy, and electric tension. The acidity is even higher than in 2023. A gorgeous appellation wine that drinks far above its level, drink it over the coming 8-10 years.

Coming from the Dundee Hills, Chris Mazepink is producing some of the region’s most impressive Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from a property he purchased and planted himself in 2013. Nestled adjacent to Domaine Drouhin and Archery Summit, where he previously served as winemaker, the site was once a walnut orchard. Today, he farms the vineyard organically and biodynamically, with a strong commitment to preserving the land’s natural biodiversity.

Our Take: A combo of estate fruit and surrounding friends, this Chardonnay reminds us so much of the Bret Brother's entry level Burgundian stuff. A touch of mango and tropical fruit on the nose leads into burnt lemon—not bitter—alongside honey, ballpark peanuts, saline minerality and delicate sunflower notes. Weighty and textural, yet balanced by bright acidity, with a savory, persistent finish.
