I’ve felt that Symington’s red table wines from the same Quintas as its more-famous Ports have gradually gotten better, noticeably smoother, in recent years. This one from the famous Vesuvio estate in the upper Douro is still a blend of traditional Port grapes, but it is primarily produced from two, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. It is very smooth and harmonious with medium body and herbal red fruitiness that is both vibrant and mellow with good acidity and a mouthful of dusty tannins. 91 Roger Morris

Wide aromatic range, encompassing fig, rock rose, fennel, lavender, and a hint of dry pine needles. Full-bodied on the palate with expressive tannins that define poise and power, complemented by good levels of acidity, which deliver great balance. Vigorous, whilst graceful, with tension and grip suggesting good ageing potential in bottle.

A great companion wine for rich, well-seasoned dishes.
