Violin Wines Chardonnay Bracken Vineyard Willamette Valley 2023
Our Take: Pale lemon-gold color. Strikingly bright and high-toned, opening with lifted aromas of lemon zest, green apple, lime blossom, and crushed white flowers. A strong mineral core runs through the wine, evoking wet stone, chalk, and coastal salinity. The palate is taut, precise, and deeply energetic, driven by vibrant acidity and a linear, mouthwatering structure. Citrus oil, underripe orchard fruit, and subtle saline notes build in intensity across the mid-palate, while a fine phenolic grip adds texture and focus. Long, clean, and highly energized on the finish, this is a sharply defined, mineral-driven expression of Chardonnay with exceptional freshness and tension.
From the winery:
The mature block of 76 and 95 clone make up the bulk, but we used nearly a third from the younger vines growing on the steepest part of the upper slope, a clonal mix including some 2% aligoté. Racy acid was our expectation and we were able to capture this essence in the best way. Barrel fermentation in both 500 Liter and 228 Liter barrels lasted nearly 7 months, with a further 5 months aging on lees before transfer to stainless before harvest. The selection for this blend came from 75% barrels that were filled directly from pressing with no settling of juice, where we often gain the most in texture and raciness. After a natural cold stabilization and gentle filtration, bottling was done with the Pinot noir at the end of January, 2025.
The wine reflects the ocean, feeling its hard breezes in the most overt way during the growing season. Icy, taught, an edge of tropical fruit against waxy and electric structure. A welcomed salinity carries this wine across the palate before its flesh yields way to zippy, lip-smacking orchard and stone fruits. Tensile, vibrating, and focused.
