Bricco delle Viole has long been one of the stars of the Vajra portfolio as it is their home turf surrounding the winery, and the cru that they own the largest plots of. Although a few other Bricco delle Viole bottlings can be found, for those who want a gorgeous, aromatic, and granularly-defined Barolo the Vajra bottling has often been a great choice.

98 pts Jeb Dunnuck
A jeweled ruby color, the 2022 Barolo Bricco delle Viole saw one of the largest crop losses in the vintage, with roughly 20 to 30 percent of the fruit lost. Aromas of cherry cordial, framboise, preserved roses, and fresh lavender lead into a stunning palate that is pure, long, and beautifully balanced. As is often the case, this cuvée stands out in the range and may well be among the highlights of the vintage across the region. Drink 2026-2046.

96 pts James Suckling
A very absorbing nose, showing flowers, passion fruit, sandalwood and crunchy red berries. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, with a detailed, precise tannin structure and tender fruit, finishing firm and focused. From one of the higher-altitude crus in Barolo. This needs two to three years to soften. Better from 2029.

Bricco delle Viole Cru
Its name, “Hill of Violets”, originates by the flowers that here blossom early due to the perfect south exposure. Up above the fogs, Bricco delle Viole enjoys the earliest sunrise and the last sunset every day. Thanks to its vines dating back to 1949, a dramatic diurnal temperature range and this pure light, Bricco delle Viole generates a sophisticated and profound Barolo of bright aromatics, chiseled tannins and subtle minerality.

Bricco delle Viole is one of the last vineyards to be picked, usually around mid of October. Grapes are sorted manually three times: directly on the vine, as whole clusters on the sorting tables, and lastly as single berries after destemming. Vinification is traditional, and is carried in custom designed vertical tini, with gentle punch down and rinsing of the cap, followed by an extensive period of maceration under submerged cap (cappello sommerso). Malolactic in stainless steel, the following spring. Bricco delle Viole is aged in large Slavonian casks, mostly 25 and 50 hectoliters. Aging varies between 30 and 42 months and was of almost 32 months in 2016. Raking is an individual choice, cask by cask. 2016 was bottled on July 30th 2019.
