Terroir al Limit Terra de Cuques Priorat Red 2018
Terroir al Limit Terra de Cuques Priorat Red 2018
92+ Wine Advocate Robert Parker
The ripe red 2018 Terra de Cuques is a 50/50 blend of Garnacha and Cariñena from different vineyards around the village of Torroja (there are some grapes from Poboleda, a cooler village) that fermented equal parts in stainless steel and concrete; it matured in concrete and foudres but with the intention to abandon the aging in oak in the near future. It has lots of notes of licorice and Mediterranean herbs, intermixed with ripe berries and very little impact from the oak. The palate is round and reveals abundant grainy tannins. This is a powerful Terra de Cuques. 18,000 bottles were filled in September 2020.

The surprising news from Terroir al Limit is that they have sold all their oak foudres (but one for the white/orange Pedra de Guix!) to focus on aging their wines in concrete and for a shorter time! They started this years ago, and it was accelerated by their experience in Montsant (Terroir Sense Fronteres) to the point that there was hardly any oak in the 2019 and nothing in 2020! They don't have a destemmer here (or in Montsant), and all their wines ferment with indigenous yeasts, so the wines are about naked expression of the grapes and places, wines of great purity.
