The 2020 Barbaresco Gallina is the most open-knit of the Barbarescos in Luca Roagna's range. Crushed flowers, mint, kirsch, sweet red cherry and cinnamon all life from the glass. Soft, silky contours add to the wine's considerable charms. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this jewel of a wine.
This is a magnificent set of new releases from Luca Roagna. The wines are perhaps a touch more open than they can be in more austere years, and yet they offer tons of classicism. Roagna gave the 2020 Barbarescos and Barolos a whopping 60 days on the skins, with spontaneous primary and secondary fermentations. The wines were aged for about 2.5 years in cask and then cement. Because of some practical considerations, the 2020s were bottled about a month later than normal. The Roagna Barolos and Barbarescos can seem a bit ethereal in the early going, but they often fill out with time in bottle. The wines also respond quite well to air, so I would not be afraid to open them in advance. Lastly, there is no new release of the flagship Barbaresco Crichët Pajé this year, as Roagna did not bottle the 2017.
