A year after I first tasted it, the 2019 Taurasi Riserva Grand Cru Luigi Moio has taken on a new dimension. Ground cloves, allspice, cedar shavings and incense complicate aromas of wild blueberry and plum. Cooling acidity propels crisp raspberry and sour cherry across seamless textures, while a crunch of minerality adds form toward the close. Tinges of citrus and tart raspberry offset a lavender and violet resonance, as fine tannins add youthful poise. The layers and complexity here are otherworldly. Give the 2019 at least another five years or more to find its perfect footing.

The 2021 Taurasis from Quintodecimo are glorious. The vintage’s combination of ripe fruit and structure plays directly into Luigi Moio’s polished, Bordeaux-influenced approach, yielding wines of both power and grace. The 2020 Riserva Grand Cru Luigi Moio is fleshier and more fruit-driven, with sweeter tannins, but it retains excellent balance. Quintodecimo did not produce Taurasi from the difficult 2023 season. Instead, all of the estate’s Aglianico was directed into Terra d’Eclano. The resulting wine lacks the power of Taurasi but rises well above the usual expectations for this bottling. The 2025 whites are also particularly balanced, with excellent acidity. It appears to have been an unusually even growing season, although the reds will provide a fuller picture of the vintage.

"The 2019 Taurasi Riserva Grand Cru Luigi Moio is a spice box on the nose that captures the imagination with aromas of crushed wild blueberries, black cherries, cloves, lavender and a hint of leather. This wine is a model of purity, silky and serene, with polished waves of ripe red and black fruit carried by a stream of vibrant acidity. A saturation of exotic spices develops towards the end. The 2019 finishes long and structured, with a hint of blood orange adding freshness as the violet florals slowly fade. This is the first vintage of the Grand Cru Luigi Moio, which comes from a plot originally used for Terra d'Eclano and planted in 2015. It undergoes the same ageing process as the estate's other Taurasis and spends 24 months in new French barriques."

"This statuesque red, balanced and harmonious, effortlessly combines a concentrated blend of crème de cassis, blackberry paste, cigar box spice, bay leaf, tar, mocha, sassafras root and ground white pepper with muscular, moulded tannins. Although it shows an expressive character today, it is compact and tightly knit. With its backbone of bright acidity, it should give pleasure for many years to come."

Altitude: 420 metres
Exposure: North/West
Soils: Expandable clays rich in limestone.
Viticulture: Planting density 5000 vines/hectare. Counter espalier with spurred cordon pruning. Yeld 1 kg/vine. Manually picked in 15 kg boxes.
Winemaking: After the selection of the grapes, before and after destemming, the crushed grapes, ferment about 20-25 days at 28-30° C.
Aging: The Wines are aged for 24 months in new oak barrels.
