The vineyard is a long, South/West exposed hillside in the southern part of the Barbaresco village, not far from the river. The light limestone soil with relatively low calcium content compared to other areas of Barbaresco produces wines where tannins are never dominant, instead they show a silky quality on the palate that makes them extremely attractive and seductive, never imposing, always elegant. Behind the smooth elegance however, lies a core of powerful structure and very well balanced tannins that give to the Rio Sordo its complexity and longevity. First produced as a single vineyard by Produttori del Barbaresco in 1978.

96+ Ian D'Agata Wine Review
Good full ruby-red. Big, deep aromas of blueberry, crushed rose petal, licorice and dark chocolate, with a herbal nuance not unlike the sage that is more typical of wines form the Pora cru. Then sweet, lush and deep, with lovely lift to the violet, licorice and sandalwood flavours. Firmly structured and long on the aftertaste; while it is already showing good mid-palate fat, this really needs at least a few years to expand. It’s a deeper and more saline Barbaresco than the 2021 Riserva Pora, if less immediately forward and approachable, but for all its sweetness and size, the 2021 Rio Sordo manages to maintain impressive verve. A very promising, excellent Rio Sordo bottling. Currently this is mad with grapes from two growers (one quite large, Marengo) but as of the 2025 vintage it will be only one because one grower decided to sell his plots (two pieces to Cascina delle Rose and Marchesi di Gresy). Drinking window: 2030-2040. (12/5/25)

The 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo marries finesse and power. Open-knit aromatics make a strong first impression. Layered and resonant in the glass, with tons of supporting structure, the Rio Sordo is going to need a few years to come into its own. Crushed rose petal, cedar, spice and tobacco lend notable finesse. The 2021 needs time, but it's got the goods. The explosive, aromatic finish is sublime. - By Antonio Galloni on October 2025

Eucalyptus, dark spice, dark-skinned berry, iris, camphor and leather aromas come to the forefront on the vividly fragrant 2021 Rio Sordo Riserva from Produttori del Barbaresco. Showing the great intensity that’s a hallmark of the outstanding vintage, the structured palate offers ripe cherry, wild strawberry, orange zest, hazelnut and dark culinary spice alongside firm, well-integrated tannins while fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Drink 2028–2036. Abv: 14.5% (Sep 2025)

Dense and even square-shouldered, with a smoldering inner core of black cherry and blackberry fruit shaded by iron and underbrush flavors. Fresh and harmonious despite a swath of broad tannins on the finish, which goes on and on. Best from 2029 through 2047. (Mar 2026) - B.S.

The Produttori del Barbaresco 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo is a wine of finesse and measured restraint with a playful and accessible personality. Rio Sordo generally falls among the more delicate and lighter-weight wines in this collection of nine Riservas, often occupying a comfortable middle ground in the tasting lineup. The 2021 vintage underscores those qualities with elegant fruit, graceful structure and a sense of effortless balance. Silky tannins frame a medium- to full-bodied texture, giving the wine extra polish. Sourced from 4.5 hectares of limestone soils, this release was fermented in stainless steel and aged in large oak botti, with a production of 13,300 bottles. Rio Sordo may not seek power, but it delivers charm and remarkable drinkability. Published: Jul 23, 2026
