This single vineyard looks South/East, facing the cooler morning sunshine instead of the warmer afternoon sun. Because of that, the Muncagota vineyard shows beautiful floral characteristics and often a specific mint character on the nose. Calcareous soil and a low level of sand gives to the wines of Muncagota extremely focused fruit and firm, stylish tannin. Muncagota is a perfect example of the elegant and intense qualities that make Barbaresco one of the most interesting and unique wines of the world. First produced by Produttori del Barbaresco, as Moccagatta, in 1967. Muncagota is the piedmontese dialect version of the word Moccagatta, same vineyard, different spelling.

You’ll find compelling aromas of rosemary, hay, camphor and crushed mint on the intensely fragrant and fabulous 2021 Muncagota. Full-bodied and loaded with energy, the savory palate features ripe red cherry, black raspberry, citrus and dark spice as well as the rosemary note from the nose. Firm, well-integrated tannins provide support and give the finish grip. Drink 2029–2036. Abv: 14.5%. (Sep 2025)
95+ Ian D'Agata Wine Review
Deep red with some ruby. Spicy aromas of red and dark fruit, minerals, chlorophyll and licorice. Then savoury and saline, with flavours veering more towards Oriental woods, herbs, mushrooms, cedar and violet rather than sweet fleshy fruit. A more compact, cooler-styled Barbaresco Riserva, boasting a minty eucalyptus note that is even more pronounced in cool, years. Less developed and open on the finish and still youthfully tannic but very elegant. The Produttori coop is the only winery bottling a Muncagota wine, so the vineyard is less-known compared to other Barbaresco crus. Drinking window: 2029-2038. (12/5/25)

Drinking Window 2027 - 2041
The 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is laced with strong floral and savory notes. Brisk acids and beams of supporting tannin give the 2021 its driving, tense personality. I expect those qualities will be positives for the future, but today the Muncagota is pretty forbidding. Give this time. This is one of the most tense editions of this wine I can remember tasting. Drink: 2027-2041. - By Antonio Galloni on October 2025

Supple in texture and beautifully balanced, this red almost seems to defy gravity with its airy feel and bright flavors of strawberry, cherry, rose hip and mineral. Tightens up on the finish, where the red fruit notes mingle with chalky tannins. Best from 2029 through 2047. (Mar 2026) - B.S.

From a warm and well-ventilated 4.5-hectare site, the Produttori del Barbaresco 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is fleshed out and generous across the mid-palate, offering ripe flavors of blackcurrant and wild plum that lean toward the darker end of the Nebbiolo spectrum. There is greater power here in terms of both texture and aromatic intensity, making this wine feel bolder and more substantial than many of its counterparts in the Riserva lineup. The warmth of the site is evident in the wine's richness and concentration, yet the precision of the 2021 vintage keeps everything balanced and focused. Fermented in stainless steel and aged in large oak botti, this release totals 13,300 bottles and stands out for its depth and commanding presence. Published: Jul 23, 2026
