Drinking window: 2027 - 2039
The 2024 Pinot Noir Hyland Vineyard wafts up with a bouquet that reminds me of an exotic herbal tea, mixing incense with smoky crushed stones, lavender, Earl Grey and sugar-dusted strawberries. It sweeps across the palate like liquid cashmere, silken and pleasantly weighty, with cooling acidity and plump red and blue fruits that settle on the senses. Crunchy mineral tones mingle with blood orange through a finish that is dramatically long yet impossibly fresh.

Evan Martin of Martin Woods is a terroir-focused winemaker with deep knowledge of the parcels he works with and the broader vineyard landscapes around them. He speaks with reverence for the land and his fellow producers, and his reputation now extends throughout the vineyards of Oregon and Washington. The 2024s are among the strongest wines yet from Martin Woods. He chose not to make a Bednarik Pinot Noir in 2024 due to a small fire near the vineyard that caused smoke taint, but he otherwise produced the full range. The 2024 Koosah Vineyard Pinot Noir lags slightly behind Hyland, Temperance Hill and Jessie James, though the difference is minor. Martin commented, “We should have reduced yields more in Koosah.” The 2024 Koosah Chardonnay more than compensates. The Temperance Hill Chardonnay is also a highlight.

Another development, this time from the 2025 vintage, is the introduction of a dry Riesling from the Hyland Vineyard 1G-North parcel. Martin typically makes a sweet Riesling from this site with late-harvest, botrytized fruit. However, he wasn’t happy with the conditions in 2025 and chose to make a dry Riesling instead. These own-rooted vines, planted in 1973 at 625 feet of elevation on a north-facing slope, are heavily affected by the cooling currents of the Van Duzer Corridor. The result is compelling. Evan believes the 2024 vintage is shaping up to be exceptionally strong. At harvest, some sites required a very long hang time and were picked over an extended period rather than within the typical two to two-and-a-half weeks. The wines ultimately combine the generosity of 2021 with the acidity and structure of 2019 while retaining the elegance of 2023. Pouring a bright transparent ruby hue, the 2024 Pinot Noir Hyland Vineyard leaps from the glass with wild strawberries, fresh mint, and bright spice. From the steepest north-facing slope they farm, planted largely to Coury selection with some Dijon 115, it is medium-bodied and offers remarkable purity, finesse, and floating silkiness to its tannins. Beneath its elegance lies impressive intensity and aging potential. Drink 2026-2040.
