Wild herbs and strawberries are neatly complemented by hints of wet stone as the 2024 Rosato opens in the glass. Pleasantly sweet up front, this soothes with its soft textures and citrus-laced orchard fruit tones. This tapers off crisp, with tension and a lovely framework of subtle tannins that frame the experience beautifully as a salty resonance fades. - By Eric Guido on May 2025

Sadly, Girolamo Russo decided not to bottle any Contrada wines from 2023. All of their Nerello Mascalese went into the Etna Rosso A Rina, which still totaled only 50% of the normal production. For Russo fans, this is a wine to hunt for. It’s a gorgeous interpretation of the vintage, atypical of most wines I’ve ever tasted at this address, yet stunningly beautiful. Luckily, we still have the 2022s to hold us over. It’s a selection of truly elegant wines, but in the end, the San Lorenzo, from 90-year-old vines and the selection “Piano delle Colombe” really steals the show.

Grapes: 100% Nerello Mascalese
Farming: Certified Organic
Age of vines: Planted between 1920 and 2005
Altitude & Soil Type: 725 M, volcanic
Winemaking: 4 hours maceration, controlled low temperature fermentation in steel tanks with indigenous yeasts Aging: 6 months in stainless steel, on the lees

Made entirely of old-vine Nerello Mascalese grown in the San Lorenzo contrada. The grapes are harvested manually at the beginning of October; the whole bunches is pressed, which takes about five hours, allowing for some extraction of color and flavor from the skins. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, using indigenous yeasts, at controlled temperature. The wine is then aged in tank for about six months, then filtered and bottled. About fifteen thousand bottles are produced each vintage.
