The 2020 Dominio de Bibei is 93% Brancellao and 3% Mouratón from Val do Bibei, Ribeira Sacra, aged 19 months in 500-liter Hungarian oak barrels. Garnet in hue, it offers subtle aromas of cherry, raspberry and dark fruit, along with laurel and pink peppercorn touches. The oak is discreet, allowing the wine’s delicate, fluid character and active tannins to shine. Long on flavor, the 2020 is distinctive, cleansing and elegant. - By Joaquín Hidalgo on February 2025

Dominio do Bibei Tinto 2020 is an authentic reflection of Ribeira Sacra’s dramatic landscapes and ancient viticultural heritage. This remote region in Galicia, in Spain’s verdant northwest, is defined by vertiginous terraces carved into the slopes of the Sil and Bibei rivers. The vineyards, many over 50 years old, are rooted in a mosaic of slate, granite, and clay soils, and sit at elevations that capture the cooling Atlantic breezes. The result is a long, slow ripening season that preserves acidity, refines tannins, and imbues the wines with remarkable aromatic intensity.

The Tinto 2020 is crafted from predominantly old-vine Mencía, complemented by small amounts of indigenous red varieties including Brancellao, Mouratón, and Garnacha Tintorera. Each parcel is harvested by hand—no easy feat on these precipitous slopes—and the fruit is meticulously sorted to ensure only the finest clusters make it to the winery. Fermentation takes place with native yeasts in a combination of small stainless steel vats, wooden fermenters, and concrete tanks, with gentle extraction to protect the wine’s delicacy and nuance. Maturation is equally thoughtful: a mix of large-format neutral oak barrels, concrete, and amphora allow the wine to evolve slowly, maintaining purity of fruit while integrating its structure.

In the glass, the 2020 vintage immediately charms with vibrant aromas of wild raspberry, redcurrant, and pomegranate, laced with notes of violet, rose petal, and Mediterranean herbs. Layers of crushed stone, fennel seed, and subtle spice hint at the wine’s mountain origins. The palate is medium-bodied yet wonderfully refined, offering a silken texture balanced by mouthwatering acidity and fine, mineral-edged tannins. Bright red fruit flavors are lifted and precise, unfolding gradually into savory tones of dried herbs and graphite. The finish is long, graceful, and saline—an elegant nod to the region’s Atlantic influence.

The Dominio do Bibei Tinto 2020 is not just a wine; it’s a story of place, told through careful farming, patient craftsmanship, and respect for tradition. It will shine now with a slight chill alongside charcuterie, roast poultry, or grilled vegetables, but has the poise and structure to develop beautifully over the next 5–7 years
