Coming from the Anderson Valley, the 2022 Pinot Noir Wendling Vineyard is a bright ruby hue and is a snappy and even-feeling wine. With a medium to lean frame, approachable tannins, and notes of grenadine, fresh purple flowers, and mossy forest earth, it’s a highly charming wine with a more approachable and supple feel in the range and offers a wide drinking window over the next 10-12 years.

The 2022s from Ross Cobb are some of the best wines from the vintage, especially those that are sourced from his estate vineyard holdings. The reds are tension-packed and structured, with textures reminiscent of elegantly styled Nebbiolo, and I highly encourage readers to check them out.

The 2022 Pinot Noir Wendling Vineyard is a classy, translucent wine. Blood orange, cinnamon, star anise and rose petal lend an exotic flair to this mid-weight Pinot. In 2022, the Wendling is racy and extroverted, but it all works so well. Everything here speaks to balance. This is very rich but not as exuberant as some of the other wines.

Ross Cobb follows his stellar 2021 Pinots with a set of 2022s that aren’t too far behind. Cobb opted to pick all his Pinot fruit after the Labor Day heat spikes. He gave the 2022s around 30 days on the skins, with a healthy amount of whole clusters. The wines spent 22 months in light-toast French oak barrels, in the classic Cobb style that favors longer élevage in wood than is common in the United States. Alcohols are a bit higher than normal, but not noticeably so. Although the 2022s don't quite have the dimension of the 2021s, they come very close. Fermented with 50% whole clusters, the 2022 Pinot Noir Wendling Vineyard bursts from the glass with layered scents of pomegranate, blackberry, hibiscus, sage and lavender. The palate is just as generous with layer after layer of floral fruit. It’s structured by chalky tannins and refreshing acidity and has a very long, detailed finish. 300 cases were made.
