This Dolcetto knocks it out of the park and is one of my favorite expression of the grape from what will be remembered as a challenging year with summer heat spikes. The Cascina Penna-Currado 2023 Dolcetto d'Alba Bricco Lago is also a terrific value that offers the bright flavors and plump blueberry intensity you want when pairing with your favorite pasta dish or a wood-oven flatbread. With 35 years of winemaking experience, vintners Elena Penna and Luca Currado knew exactly what style they wanted to achieve with this entry-level red. The inspiration is Beaujolais. Indeed, some whole-cluster fruit is used. The results are simple and fresh but not banal. The idea is to appeal to a new generation of young wine drinkers. Published: Jan 30, 2025

Just bottled, the 2023 Dolcetto d’Alba Bricco Lago is a powerful, explosive wine. Graphite, lavender, spice and leather meld into a core of intense dark fruit. The 60% stems are not especially noticeable—at this stage, they seem to add energy more than anything else, but I suspect that will change as this recovers from its recent bottling. Clean saline notes extend the finish. - By Antonio Galloni on September 2024

A youthful purple with magenta at the rim, the 2023 Dolcetto D’Alba Bricco Lago offers more brightness, with crunchy black raspberry seeds, fresh herbs, and a much more pleasing mineral backbone, with dark earth and a light peppery touch. There’s a lot of life in this wine. With great personality and poppy freshness, this is a great expression with terrific structure. Drink 2024-2028. The 2022 was a more classic, traditional style, and I think the 2023 is going to really take things to the next level and harkens to the personality and charm of great cru Beaujolais.

Vineyards lie in Monforte, in an area with particularly great natural biodiversity. Elena and Luca strongly believe in Dolcetto as an important “tool” for young wine drinkers and their entry level exposure to the Langhe. The grapes are vinified whole cluster and aging takes place in stainless steel for this fragrant rendition of Dolcetto
