The 2019 Barbaresco Ovello is a wild, potent wine redolent of savory, earthy and mineral tones. As is so often the case with the Ovello, fruit is very much in the background. Readers will find an intense, linear Barbaresco endowed with tons of character.

Franca Miretti continues to do an admirable job in running the estate established by her late husband, Renato Vacca. This is a strong set of wines from Cantina del Pino, but readers tasting this range need to be prepared to give the wines considerable aeration. The Barbarescos spend three weeks on the skins. Some of the tanks may also see submerged cap maceration. Aging is 24 months in 20-25HL casks. These are pretty rich, structured Barbarescos that emerge fully only over time.

Opening to dusty mineral notes of crushed limestone, the 2019 Barbaresco Ovello is a focused and angular wine that makes for a very pretty presentation. The aromas are direct and vertical, given momentum by shadings of iron ore and pencil shaving. I love the extreme focus of this wine. Some 6,000 bottles were released, and as always, Cantina del Pino offers enormous quality at this price point. This whole portfolio from Cantina del Pino is terrific, with top-notch expressions of Nebbiolo that are fine and fragile.
