The 2022 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a total stunner. A Barolo of exquisite finesse, the 2022 shows why this site is so highly regarded. Silky, aromatic and wonderfully deep, this is seriously impressive. All the vineyard signatures are beautifully delineated in the glass. Rose petal, sweet red berry fruit, chalk, mint and white pepper come alive. What a total delight. The Brovia Rocche is without question one of the wines of the vintage, which is one of the most erratic in recent memory. Bravo!
Alex Sánchez and Elena Brovia turned out a superb set of 2022 Barolos. Their Barolo Rocche is one of my early favorites in this very challenging vintage. The 2022s were vinified in cement with ambient yeasts. Sánchez added that the 2022s spent a few more days on the skins than in most years, as the wines extracted slowly. Sánchez and Brovia shortened time in cask to 18 months from the more customary 24, a well-judged call given the style of the vintage. The last few years have not been easy at Brovia because of family issues that resulted in a split between sisters Elena and Cristina Brovia. As for the wines, they are superb. - Galloni January 2026

The Brovia 2022 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione has a clear edge over the Villero in that it is more immediately expressive, revealing the delicate chalky minerality that distinguishes this celebrated MGA. Aromas of wild currant, rose petal and blue flower emerge with precision, but it is the wine's finely etched mineral character that ultimately steals the show. The palate is lean, and although the 15% alcohol is higher than one would hope, the wine's lighter frame makes for a more immediate drinking style. Fermentation begins in cement before the wine is transferred to 40-hectoliter French and Slavonian oak casks for aging. Planted on sandy soils at 300 to 350 meters above sea level with southeastern exposures, the 1.6-hectare Rocche di Castiglione vineyard captures the aromatic finesse and refined structure that make this site one of the appellation's benchmarks. - Monica Larner July 2026
