The 2024 Pinot Noir Cumberland Reserve opens with vibrant black cherry, autumnal spices, saddle leather and camphor as it evolves in the glass. On the palate, pure silk textures carry ripe wild berry fruits under an air of cola and violet pastille. It leaves a gentle tannic inflection and a resonance of licorice on the finish, with excellent length and balanced structure. The Cumberland Reserve is an unparalleled value in first-class Oregon Pinot Noir. - By Eric Guido, July 2026
The new red releases at Bergström are amazing follow-ups to the 2023s. While the 2023s were dark and moody, fruit-driven yet complex, the 2024s take things to a much prettier place with soaring aromatics, bright red fruit and plenty of acidity. Josh Bergström explained, “Two thousand twenty-four had the fewest overall growing degree days since 2019, making it a cooler vintage. A very wet winter led to a very cool spring. Then we had numerous little heat spikes, but the moisture in the soil helped. Ripening was steady. After the August rain, we got a big cooldown. It was a long, drawn-out picking. We harvested with three passes through the vineyard.” Bergström’s use of whole clusters during fermentation really paid off in this vintage, as the extended season yielded fully ripe stems. Do not miss these throwback wines, which recall a time before Oregon’s warming trend. Bergström releases Chardonnays a year later than Pinots, and the 2023 Chardonnays excelled. They are complex and built for cellaring. Bergström also bottled single-vineyard wines from all of the sites that make up the top-tier Sigrid, which is a real stunner in 2023.
