Vibrant ruby violet colour. Just such a pleasure to be taste, so much juice and character, concentration and confidence. Will Harlan director, David Cilli winemaker. 12ha estate set high above Oakville with slopes running from 150-340m. Long ageing in large sized Stockinger casks, minimal new oak.

100 James Suckling
Stupendous aromas of blackberries and blackcurrants with hints of mint, cedar and pine. Notes of iodine, tobacco and mushrooms. Medium- to full-bodied with solid tannins that spread across the palate and melt into the wine. They frame the wine and give it form and tension, and then the center palate is energized with pure, airy, bright fruit. Available in 2026. - Review Date: 01/2024

100 pts The Wine Palate
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2021 Promontory swans out with gregarious scents of juicy blueberries, fresh blackcurrants, and kirsch leading to suggestions of candied violets, forest floor, black olives, and cardamom with a waft of wet slate. The medium to full-bodied palate shimmers with electric black and red berry layers, framed by very firm yet beautifully ripe tannins and impactful tension, finishing long and minerally.

99 pts Decanter
Aged for 30 months in large casks and a further 18 months in bottle prior to release, the 2021 shows real intentionality, poise, and polish, and is incredibly compelling from the first sip. Gorgeous iron-scented mineral overtones mingle with currant and cherry fruit and cherry pit. Medium-bodied, with noble, supple tannins framing very pure, very juicy fruit. The wine is so pristine and fresh on the palate that it has an almost spring-water-like quality. The tannins build in complexity as you swirl the wine across the palate, with ultra-fine grains of a gravelly type, supporting more complex notes of unsmoked tobacco, coriander, and a deep forest character reminiscent of walking through a grove of bay laurel and live oaks after a rainfall. Tension-driven and detail-oriented, this is one contemplative wine with ample room to develop royal complexities over the years.

Flat-out awesome, the 2021 Promontory continues to show brilliantly and will most likely merit a triple-digit rating in a decade. Cassis, graphite, crushed stone, black olives, and violets define the aromatics, and it has a liquid, rock-like minerality. It's full-bodied on the palate, remarkably well-balanced, with ultra-fine tannins, integrated acidity, and a great finish. It's powerful, yet incredibly elegant and seamless, and it's going to age for 40+ years. Drink 2025-2065. - Review Date: 12/2025

99 pts Vinous
The 2021 Promontory is fabulous. It shows all the natural intensity of a vintage defined by intense drought. Dark-toned fruit, graphite, new leather, spice and chocolate all meld together in this powerful, structured wine from Promontory. Potent tannins need time to soften, but there's a ton of underlying finesse here. Readers should be in no rush. (AG) - Review Date: 11/2025

97 pts Wine Advocate
Matured entirely in large-format oak (foudres ranging from 1,000 to 4,600 liters in capacity), the medium-bodied 2021 Promontory remains quite taut and tannic; it definitely needs another few years in the bottle to become approachable. Concentrated tart cherries are joined by hints of bay leaf and gentle sandalwood notes, while the mouthwatering finish shows great intensity and length. (JC) - Review Date: 05/2026

WINERY:
Growing Season

Rain proved as reluctant to fall during this growing season as it had the previous year: from January to March, the Territory received a little more than half its average precipitation for those combined months, though the spring remained cool, especially in May. This colder stretch subsided approaching mid-June, when temperatures peaked on June 17, tipping above 100 degrees. Summer nevertheless progressed mildly, though not without diurnal variation. Days vacillated between the 80s and low 90s, and the nights were cold, often 50 degrees or below. Late August and the first week of September saw the thermometer rise to the mid-90s, bringing many blocks to maturity and condensing the more typically measured pace of harvest. Picking began on August 26th and was completed on September 15th. Yields were modest, due in part to scarce groundwater, but the berries were small and concentrated. The 89 lots were divided among 61 separate fermentations.

Tasting Notes
The events of this temperately mild, dry season unite in a vintage distinguished by resolute tannins that encompass and enfold an inner suppleness. Youthful and, at first, almost introverted, the structure of the wine suggests a rosebud whose firm and tightly layered sheathing protects a darker, saturated core within. The initial aromas are gentle, cool, the texture seamlessly interwoven. Lucent acidity permeates the mid-palate and provides a counterbalance, introducing a certain levity as the wine softens and begins to open from its center. This progression unfolds perhaps more concentrically rather than rectilinearly, as dewy, velvety petals reveal the curvature of the entirety and its whorl of intricate details. Ample minerality carries through the finish, enlivening the impressive dimensions—as though all the complex intrinsics of the land have come together cohesively in what we perceive as a single, noble form.
