Venica & Venica Primarul Friulano Collio 2024
93 points Falstaff
Clear straw yellow with golden nuances. Medium intensity on the nose, chamomile blossom, kumquat, a little wet stone on the finish. Clearer on the palate, with juicy peach, animating acidity, great drinking flow through to the persistent finish. (Aug 2025)
- Variety: Friulano
- Vineyards: Estate Friulano vineyards in the rolling hills of the Collio DOC, including Venica’s historic old Friulano vines; the estate’s oldest Founder’s Vineyard was planted by Daniele Venica in the early 1940s.

Rocky, mineral-rich and exceptionally well-draining, with significant calcium carbonate, magnesium and manganese. Ponca is one of the keys to Collio’s great white wines, contributing the minerality, salinity and freshness that work so well with Friulano’s naturally richer texture and classic almond character.
- Appellation: Collio DOC
- Alcohol/Acidity: 13% / 4.5 g/L
- Pre-Fermentation: Approximately 18 hours of cool maceration at 11–12°C, protected from oxygen using recycled fermentation CO₂ to minimize antioxidant use

- Aging Potential: 10+ years
Primarûl means “first among the first” in Friulian, a fitting name for a wine that celebrates Friulano as the quintessential white grape of the region. It was the first grape harvested and vinified by founder Daniele Venica, and remains the classic taj di blanc—the everyday glass of white wine—of Friuli. Gianni and Giorgio Venica gave the wine the Primarûl name for the estate’s 90th anniversary, honoring both their grandfather Daniele and the grape that remains at the heart of Friulian wine culture.
Venica & Venica, based in Dolegna del Collio in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, is one of the region’s benchmark family estates, known for producing white wines of precision, depth, and elegance. Their Friulano comes from estate vineyards on the rolling Collio hills, where vines are rooted in the region’s distinctive “ponca” soils—a stratified mix of marl and sandstone that imparts both richness and minerality. Sustainable vineyard practices and careful canopy management ensure healthy fruit, with harvesting done entirely by hand.
The 2024 vintage was marked by balanced ripening, giving Friulano grapes both aromatic intensity and freshness. After destemming and gentle pressing, fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel, with partial aging on fine lees for several months to enhance texture and complexity while preserving varietal purity.
In the glass, Friulano 2024 displays a pale straw-yellow color with green reflections. Aromas are inviting and layered: ripe pear, yellow apple, and white peach mingle with wildflowers, almond blossom, and subtle herbal notes. A faint hint of citrus zest and flint underscores its freshness. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and harmonious, with a silky texture balanced by bright acidity. Flavors of stone fruit, citrus, and melon are accented by Friulano’s signature almond note, while a savory, saline mineral core drives the long finish. The 2024 shows both elegance and approachability—vibrant in youth, yet capable of developing additional nuance over the next 3–5 years.
A versatile food wine, it pairs beautifully with prosciutto di San Daniele (a classic Friulian match), seafood risottos, grilled vegetables, and soft cheeses.
Venica & Venica Friulano 2024 is a textbook expression of Friuli’s most traditional white grape: aromatic, textured, and laced with the minerality of Collio’s unique soils.
