Passopisciaro Contrada G 'Guardiola' 2022
Passopisciaro Contrada G 'Guardiola' 2022
100% Nerello Mascalese
Aging: 18 months large Slavonian oak barrels
Our take: With vines up to 140 years old, Contrada G is the "work horse" site for Passopisciaro. It sees the most consistent level of volcanic dust due to its location and elevation on Etna. It felt the biggest of the bunch for the 2022s when I tasted them in May of 2024. Think of a heavy weight boxer in his prime. That's this wine. Big tannins. Big structure and loads of power. Wild mountain cherries, tobacco leaf and cassis.

Smoky and ashy in the glass, the 2022 Etna Rosso Contrada Guardiola opens with a burst of ashen stones and grilled herbs, evolving into crushed black cherries and lifted by hints of menthol. It sweeps across the palate with textures of pure silk as a polished wave of red and black fruits swirls around a core of lively acidity. Its structure comes through on the finish as a staining of primary concentration adds a firm grip. Saline minerals linger under an air of inner florals. The 2022 Guardiola was the result of two separate harvests that were about 20 days apart due to rain. This is a wine that contrasts stunning depth with an energetic feel.

The Passopisciaro 2022 Contrada G is a true beauty in a portfolio of wines that is very impressive across the board. The "G" stands for Guardiola, one of the most stunning vineyards anywhere, at 800 meters in elevation on the blackened volcanic cone with alberello (head-pruned) vines that have reached the 140-year mark. These factors shape a silky and very elegant wine with redcurrant, grilled herb and blue rosemary flower. Only 3,700 bottles exist.
