Marcel Servin Chablis Montee de Tonnerre 1er Cru 2023
Marcel Servin Chablis Montee de Tonnerre 1er Cru 2023
Our Tasting Note: Medium straw-gold. The nose is pronounced but focused with layers of tart green apple, firm pear, lemon zest and white flowers, underpinned by wet stone, crushed chalk and a distinct saline character. Medium-bodied, with excellent flavor intensity, firm acidity and the tension and nervosity that define a great Montée de Tonnerre. Broader and more powerful than the Vaillons, but less overtly ripe than the 2022, with the fruit taking a back seat to the wine’s minerality and structure. The finish is long, crystalline and mouthwatering, leaving lingering notes of citrus peel, stone and sea spray. Another classic MdT!
Slightly set back from the Grands Crus vineyards, Montée de Tonnerre seems to be challenging the Climat right across from it, Blanchot. Its moderate slopes, exposed to the west, welcome the sun in the afternoon. The grapes ripen easily, especially since they are protected from the East winds. The shallow soil is underlain with Kimmeridgian marly limestone, and reveals veins of blue clay, which gives the wines both minerality and energy. Montée de Tonnerre is a flag-bearing Climat that covers approximately 42.5 hectares, including Chapelot, Côte de Bréchain and Pied d'Aloup.
