The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino unfolds a darkly alluring bouquet of crushed raspberries, dried violets and nuances of ginger and sage. It is mineral-intense with an attractive stony character. A silken wave of ripe red and black berry fruits slowly saturates, and a licorice tinge emerges. Hulking tannins frame the finish without slowing its momentum as a twang of citrus adds lively form. As it sits in the glass, a touch of saddle leather and more savory depth begins to emerge. Medium to full-bodied, it has ripe, well-defined tannins and a bright spine of acidity, with a lightly sanguine, iron-tinged finish. Drink this vibrant, classic effort over the coming decade or more. - Orientation: 335-340m in elevation.
- Soil: The soil is a mix of sand, clay and limestone in varying amounts depending on vineyard location.
- Viticulture: Hand-harvested from vines averaging 15 years of age.
- Vinification: Spontaneous fermentation with ambient yeast in stainless steel lasting about 25 days. Malolactic fermentation in cement.
- Aging: Aged three years in large, neutral Slavonian oak (30, 40 and 60HL casks) followed by one year in the bottle before release.
- Notes: First vintage of Brunello by Caprili was in 1978. The estate was purchased in 1965.
