Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprost Riesling Kabinett 2024
Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprost Riesling Kabinett 2024
Our Tasting Note:
Absolutely screaming nose in the glass. Not the full unleaded experience that some Rieslings can hit you with but you get that lovely note of wet asphalt after a summer rain. A touch of spice, like cayenne without the heat, tamarind and white peach. The palate is rich but not overpowering. High quality melon from a fruit salad and a hint of cream layer in the mid palate. The acid and sugar balance each other out marvelously and the finish has that gentle prickle of lime pith. Willi Schaefer never disappoints and this gem will age wonderfully in the cellar for 20+ years. A damn good Riesling.

The 2024 Graacher Domprobst Riesling Kabinett #03 is deep, refined and coolish yet also a little reductive or sulfurous on the nose at this stage. Ripe white and yellow stone fruit aromas intertwine with stony and flinty notes of cold smoke, giving a superb, very sophisticated first impression of a really noble Kabinett. On the palate, this is a refined, elegant, mouth-filling but also savory, structured, enormously fresh and mouthwatering Kabinett. It is, at this early moment, a little bit more austere and stony than Himmelreich and Sonnenuhr. This is a real character that was bottled at the end of April 2025 with 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in January 2026 (AP 03 25).

The 2024 Riesling Graacher Domprobst Kabinett still has a vestige of reductive flintiness on the nose. Green melon shimmers with citrus. Supreme fusion of flavors and absolute lightness define the palate. Juicy nectarine dances above slaty saltiness, creamy woodruff fringes smooth apricot, citrus encompasses all. Its acidity is absolutely buffered yet mouthwatering to the tenth degree. The 2024 emblematic of the Mosel, with exquisite intensity and unbelievable lightness. It is a dream. The Graacher Domprobst—home to the cathedral's vineyard—represents Mosel's most historic terroir. Willi Schaefer crafts Rieslings of remarkable finesse from the estate's steep slate vineyards, using traditional methods including spontaneous fermentation and long aging in old wooden casks. The Kabinett style offers slight sweetness and lower alcohol (typically around 10%), creating refreshment and food compatibility often lost in modern dry wines. At one year old, this 2024 vintage shows youthful primary fruit with the piercing slate minerality that characterizes the Domprobst. For those seeking to experience German Riesling tradition, this wine offers historical continuity.
