The Elio Altare 2022 Barolo has a spicy side with dark fruit, tar, licorice and a dusting of cinnamon or exotic cumin, reflecting the warmth and generosity of the vintage across the Barolo appellation. Fruit is drawn from various sites in Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, La Morra and Novello. This hot vintage delivers a slightly sweet edge, and the tannins are softly integrated, giving this wine an accessible drinking style for the near and medium term.

The 2022 Barolo is a racy, juicy wine that will drink well on release. A burst of sweet red-toned fruit, new leather, rose petal, blood orange and sweet spice races across the palate. This fruity, forward Barolo will drink well for another decade or more. Vineyard sites are Sarmassa, Bricco Ambrogio, Sorano and Pernanno. This is so drinkable.

Little by little, Silvia Altare continues to grow her family's estate. She recently acquired a parcel in Sorano that is currently used in the straight Barolo. Altare describes 2022 as a year with a very short flowering but an overall cycle from flowering to harvest of 130 days, a standard measure for a normal year. Yields were down about 20% across the board because of heat and dehydration. The 2022s saw seven to ten days on skins, Malolactic fermentation was done in stainless steel, as is the norm here, except for the Unoperuno, which is done entirely in barrique. All the Barolos were aged in French oak barrels. In tasting, the wines show terrific depth, always in the intense, fruit-forward style that is such a signature of the house.
