I tasted the 2022 Extra-Brut Hors Série in three versions during dosage trials. Ample and creamy, the 2022 is a Champagne of striking textural breadth and resonance. Layers of citrus confit and floral notes develop with time. It will be interesting to see where this ends up, as the wine itself is absolutely gorgeous. I preferred the version with the lowest dosage, as it seemed to offer the best balance in a vintage that already offers so much natural richness of its own.

Alexandre Chartogne is one of Champagne’s most dynamic growers. A new winemaking facility nearby is almost finished, while projects here seem to be many. Readers will note the range is a bit compact this year because of the challenges posed by the 2021 growing season. Chartogne will only release two 2021s, the Chemin de Reims in 2026 and the Hors Série (which he often refers to as the Avize) at a later date. In the meantime, Chartgone plans to make up for some of the lost volume by releasing magnums of several wines. These include the 2019 Chemin de Reims and the 2017, 2018 and 2019 Hors Série.
