The 2019 Barolo opens to a lean appearance with a very vibrant Nebbiolo color that shines with dark ruby highlights. There is dried cherry and candied fruit aromas on the bouquet. Those fruit layers cede to light spice lilac and campfire ash. The beauty in this wine is the extreme balance achieved in this classic vintage. It delivers on all levels: intensity length and joy. The fruit represents a blend of four MGS sites: Bricco Chiesa and Capalot in La Morra Fiasco in Castiglione Falletto and Monvigliero in Verduno. Production is an ample 32000 bottles. These are the best wines I have tasted from Oddero. I have had my eyes on this winery for decades honestly and I still remember the magical understanding I experienced as a young wine novice across from a bottle of aged Barolo made by Oddero on one of my first trips to Piedmont. Many changes have occurred over the years with regards to this brand. But Mariacristina Oddero and her children have forged forward nonetheless following an ambitious search for the best cru sites and an overhaul at the winery that prizes elegance and weightlessness in her wines. Farming is organic. In addition to these classic wines there is a new Langhe rosé made with Nebbiolo from Roero and two new vermouths. Published: Aug 24 2023

Ripe berry star anise menthol and a whiff of coconut form the nose. Elegant and focused the linear palate is still rather austere offering red cherry white pepper and black tea alongside taut fine-grained tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it energized. Drink after 2029. Abv: 14% Kerin O’Keefe May 2023

The 2021 Barolo is fabulous. Aromatic, pliant and wonderfully inviting. Oddero's Barolo shows just how appealing this vintage is. Crushed flowers, red/blue-toned fruit, spice and perfumed notes build nicely in the glass. Polished, silky tannins wrap it all together in style. Vineyard sources are Bricco Chiesa, Capalot, Bricco Fiasco and a bit of Galina.

I was so impressed with these 2021s from Poderi e Cantine Oddero. I suppose I should not be surprised, given where the wines have been over the last handful of years, but at the same time, I can't forget the enormous strides the Oddero family has made over that period. Readers will find wines that express all the best the vintage had to offer. The straight Barolo is a fabulous introduction to the range. From there, the wines just get better and better. The highlights are many. This year, I was especially struck by the Villero, a truly magnificent Barolo. It is a blend of two tanks, one of which was done with submerged cap maceration that lasted 70 days. The wines are aged in cask for around 20-23 months. Brunate, Oddero's smallest holding, is naturally aged in a smaller cask, and sees a bit less time in oak in order to soften any overt wood character. It is another exceptional wine in this lineup. As is the Barolo Rocche di Castiglione. I would be thrilled to own these wines.
