The 2021 Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso Morandina is distinctly savory, wafting up with a thrust of herbs that gives way to crushed ashen stones and smoked black raspberry. It’s round and soft textured, with a core of brisk acidity and mineral-drenched wild berry fruits. This finishes long, staining and gently tannic, leaving a licorice tinge and a bitter twang of clove. Some patience will be required to allow the 2021 to come fully into focus.
Grapes: 35% Corvina, 35% Corvinone, 23% Rondinella, 7% Oseleta
Vineyard(s): Certified organic. Sourced from vineyards in the zones of Mezzane and Tregnano in Valpolicella planted in 2001. Glacial, chalky soils.
Winemaking: The Valpolicella is passed over the dried grapes used to make the Amarone and macerated for five days.
Aging: Aged 12 months in mostly used Allier tonneaux.
A sappy, fragrant un-oaked Valpolicella with great intensity yet delicacy from the low yields of the Morandina vineyards. Herbal aromas lead on to a ripe wine packed with raspberry leaf and dense cherry characters, yet with taut balancing acidity, wonderfully fresh vibrant fruit and a bitter twist.
