Carnasciale "Botte Grande" 2022
94 pts Vinous
Drinking Window 2025 - 2034
The 2022 Carnasciale Botte Grandi + is the second release of this wine, in a lot that saw an additional eight months in wood. Once again, Podere Il Carnasciale's second wine delivers the goods. Bold, juicy and explosive, the 2022 races across the palate with an expressive mélange of dark cherry, plum, incense, mocha and new leather. What an absolute delight. Tasting this wine makes me wonder why this is not the standard approach for all vintages. The 2022 Carnasciale Botte Grandi + is a 2025 release that takes the place of the 2023 Carnasciale, which was not produced due to challenging conditions throughout the growing season. - By Antonio Galloni on February 2025
The Rogosky family continues to turn out some of the most riveting wines in all of Italy. Readers will note a new, extended-barrel version of the Carnasciale that is being released this year to compensate for that wine not being made at all in the challenging 2023 vintage. The 2021 Caberlot, which I tasted again, is just as stunning as it was last year, while the new 2022 is a promising youngster that is just starting to emerge from its shell.
My Tasting Note
Med+ to deep, ruby red core, vibrant ruby edges. The nose is pronounced, with red to dark red fruit leading the way with cherry, currants, and blackberry, subtle spices of dark cocoa, pepper, and saddle leather, earthy and mineral tones of forest floor and crushed stones. The palate is medium to full bodied, with med/med+ silky, youthful tannins, and wonderful acidity adds nice energy. Pronounced intensity on the palate, it is perfectly balanced, with freshness, fruit, and weight. Long in the finish.

- Grapes: 100% Caberlot
- Soil: The Carnasciale Vineyard sits at 420m, while the other vineyards are planted at 150-175 meters in limestone soils with chalk and sandy components
- Younger Vines: This wine is now mostly the younger vines and barrels that don't make the cut for the "Il Caberlot".
Winemaking: Destemmed, pressed, and fermented in stainless steel, malolactic occurs in barrel. Now that barrel is one large "botte grande" cask of neutral/used French oak instead of 225L bordeaux barrels typically for 22-30 months.
