Mostly Grenache with a splash of Mourvèdre from the Les Bédines lieu-dit, brought up mostly in foudre, the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Safres is similarly deeper ruby-hued and offers up a floral, peppery perfume of red plums, black raspberries, and spicy, herbes des Provence-like nuances. This medium to full-bodied red has a pure, layered, seamless mouthfeel and terrific tannins.

From: Châteauneuf-du-Pape: Alluring 2023s and Benchmark 2010s (Nov 2024) Red-fruited and spicy, the 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Safres displays lovely floral notes of rose petals and crushed violets. Packing ample freshness, the full-bodied and velvety 2023 carries spot-on balance and concludes with persistence on the alluring finale. - By Nicolas Greinacher on August 2024
My Tasting Note
A deep and dark core, vibrant ruby edges. The pronounced nose is balanced and full of succulent red, blue and black fruits, subtle spices and garrigue, lavender, violets, it is wonderfully present and here to please. The palate is med+ bodied, balanced and maintains a feminine elegance, medium grain tannins are ripe and velvety. The pronounced flavor intensity on the palate confirms the perfumed bouquet of the nose. Long, layered and deciduous on the finish. Excellent CdP!
The estate’s silkiest, most suave Châteauneuf-du-Pape, composed primarily of older-vine Grenache. ‘Safres’ refers to the wine’s terroir of compacted sand, which in the wine translates as a supple texture and smooth tannins.
Grapes: 90% Grenache / 10% Mourvèdre
Vineyard: Sandy and safres (compacted sand) soils, on the lieu-dit « Les Bédines », giving finesse and softness to the wine.
Winemaking: Hand-picking with sorting in the vineyard and then in the cellar. De-stemming (100%) and co-fermentation in wooden vats with wild yeasts. Pump-over and delestages are made during all the grape maceration (38 days).
Aging: In old foudres (30 years old) during 14 months.
