The 2022 Syrah is peppery and floral, impressing with a perfumed blend of black currants and exotic spice, lifted by a whiff of crushed stone and dried herbs. It opens with a pretty inner sweetness, showcasing crisp wild berry fruits and nuances of licorice over a silken textural wave. It finishes long and full of zesty tension, as a bump of acidity enlivens the palate and hints of tart blackberry fade. This is a total pleasure to taste.
The fully biodynamic Stefano Amerighi winery continues to refine its pure, site-transparent Syrah from Cortona. Winemaker Francesco Beligni has increased whole-cluster fermentation and discontinued the use of oak barrels, opting instead for a mix of concrete and amphora. I tasted an experimental version of their Syrah Rosa that was made without sulfur; it was a joy to taste, but it will not be released into the market at this time. Amerighi has recently acquired a parcel with stony soils in the foothills of the Apennine Mountains, planted at 700 meters of elevation. This area is outside the Cortona DOC, but it has the Amerighi team very excited. I had a chance to preview the 2024 (made with 100% stem inclusion) from concrete tank—it’s spicy, mineral-driven and refined. I can’t wait to revisit it in the future. The 2023s should not be missed. Like everyone else in this part of Italy, Cortona suffered in 2023. Amerighi lost about 20% of their yields, but the wines are quite good.

Our Tasting Note
Deep ruby with a vibrant purple-red rim. The pronounced nose opens with violets and other purple florals, followed by blackberry, blackcurrant, blueberry and red fruit, with a subtle touch of smoke. Medium to full-bodied, with firm, youthful tannins and medium acidity. The palate is concentrated and tightly layered, bringing together Tuscan richness and Northern Rhône character. The long, focused finish makes this a compelling Syrah with plenty of promise.

  • 100% Syrah
  • Demeter-certified biodynamic farming.
  • Partially de-stemmed, while some are left whole and others are lightly foot pressed
  • Fermentation occurs spontaneously in small concrete vats and without the use of pumps or temperature control
  • The wine is then allowed to clarify naturally and is moved to various vessels for aging (mostly concrete and clayver ceramic orbs, but a small portion does go into large neutral oak casks).

Importer:
Located in Cortona, in eastern Tuscany, Stefano Amerighi is a winery dedicated to the pure expression of Syrah within a unique and highly suited terroir. Surrounded by rolling hills and influenced by a balanced climate, the vineyards benefit from soils and conditions that allow this international variety to reach exceptional levels of elegance and complexity.
The project is rooted in a deep respect for nature and guided by a biodynamic philosophy, where vineyard work follows natural rhythms and aims to preserve the vitality of the ecosystem. This approach reflects a commitment to authenticity, sustainability, and the true expression of the land. The vineyards are primarily planted with Syrah, cultivated with meticulous care to enhance balance, aromatic precision, and structure. The combination of soil composition, exposure, and climate allows the grape to develop refined tannins, depth, and distinctive character.

In the cellar, the philosophy is based on minimal intervention, allowing spontaneous fermentations and natural processes to guide the evolution of the wines. The goal is to preserve purity and to express the identity of the terroir without compromise. Stefano Amerighi wines represent a benchmark for Syrah in Tuscany — elegant, complex, and terroir-driven — where biodynamic practices and craftsmanship come together to create wines of depth and authenticity.
