The 2021 Terra de Cuques is a 50-50 blend of Garnatxa and Cariñena from Priorat. Garnet in color, it features aromas of blood orange and grapefruit, with pomegranate, curry and spice hints over an herbal bouquet. Dry, lean and chalky on the palate, it offers a nimble yet concentrated mouthfeel that contrasts with the wine’s intensity. This is a modern take on Priorat reds, crafted in a distinctive style.

German winemaker Dominik Huber has lived in Priorat for two decades, establishing a winery focused on lightness and minimal fruit. His winemaking aligns with a global trend toward more ethereal wines that is gaining traction across Spain. Compared to other reds from Catalunya, his wines feel distinctly Burgundian in style, yet his interpretations of Montsant and Priorat are very effective. Huber’s wife, Tatjana Peceric, oversees oenology. Stylistically, the duo works with whole clusters and minimal aging. They harvest as early as possible, aiming to reach the lower bound of alcohol content required to maintain DO status (the wines consistently land at the 13.5% minimum). This approach has led to a reputation that runs counter to that of most in the region, especially with the reds, which are light in color and have an enticing vibrancy. Tasting these wines raises questions about the physical and stylistic limits of a terroir—hence the name of the winery.
