94 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar):
"Domaine Michel’s Vieilles Vignes bottling of Butteaux is made from vines that are closing in on seventy years of age, as these vines were planted in 1955! The 2023 version is outstanding, offering up a pure and complex aromatic constellation of lime, pear, green apple, a lovely foundation of chalky soil tones, fruit blossoms and a touch of anise in the upper register. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, complex, mineral-driven and shows off beautiful depth of fruit in the mid-palate. The finish is long, zesty and impeccably balanced. Fine, fine juice. 2028-2055. (Jan/Feb 2025)"
93 points Tim Atkin, MW (TimAtkin.com):
"Oyster shells, lemon ice box pie, yellow grapefruit and crushed flint give the nose and palate an exotic sweet-savory profile. There is lovely sapidity, brow-raising energy and a whirlwind of complexity. These 65-year-old vines sit in white clay soils that are entirely distinctive from the rest of Butteaux. (2025)"
90-93 points Jasper Morris, MW (Inside Burgundy):
"Just racked and sulphured. Perhaps the movement enforces the more exotic side, and removes the reductive aspect. This is still a solid and concentrated wine, but less easy to read today. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted Jun 2024."
This wine comes from four separate plots on the Butteaux slopes, in the western part of the Montmains valley. They are the most distant from the winery, but only 2 km away. The clays here are compact and contain marl. The wines made from these vines express great complexity on the palate. These are wines of character, excellent for enthusiasts.
