Tasting Note: Medium-plus pink in color, the nose offers mineral-laced red berries, juicy watermelon, fresh mint, and orange peel. The palate is vibrant and impeccably clear, gliding with a silky texture while delivering layers of crunchy red fruit, citrus zest, and subtle grape-skin complexity. Bright acidity and stony minerality carry through a long, refreshing finish. A serious Chavignol rosé that is as compelling as it is delicious.
Variety: Pinot Noir
Vineyard: From 35-40 year old Pinot Noir vines on the steep hillsides in front of the Boulay home in Chavignol.
Orientation: Multiple parcels, varied exposure
Soil: Steep clay hillside
Viticulture: Gerard works the soil manually and lets nature make the wine
Vinification: The hand-harvested fruit macerated for 24 hours. The press wine and free-run juice fermented separately with indigenous yeasts. Boulay blocks malolactic conversion to keep tension, and no oak is involved.
Aging: Tank aged
Production: 200 cases annually
Notes: Unlike many Sancerre Roses, Gerard harvests his Pinot specifically to make rose by direct press, then into tank. It is not a selection of young vines as he has no young Pinot vines. What makes the rosé one year could make red another, and vice versa, depending on what the vintage gives.
