95 pts Decanter
Refined, elegant aromatics opening to a deliciously ripe and plump palate that blossoms with fresh acidity. The finish is long with a gentle grip of tannin at the end. The fermentation is in a blend of stainless steel (to protect the fruit and give the vivid acidity) and oak foudres (to polish the tannins). The wine then spends 18 months in French oak barrels (60% new).

95 pts James Suckling
Aromas of blackcurrants, fresh herbs and sweet tobacco follow through to a medium to full body and firm, chewy tannins that are fine-textured, yet very evident, suggesting two to four years of bottle age will soften the wine. One of the best Mas La Planas in a while. Try after 2023.

Wine
The most pristine bunches of old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon are hand selected to craft Torres’ most prestigious red wine. A 1979 blind tasting in Paris, the Gault-Millau Wine Olympics, placed some of the world’s most respected wines such as Châteaux Latour against newcomers including Torres. The wine from Mas la Plana vineyard triumphed, placing first, and deserved recognition, putting Penedès on the map as benchmark quality for the best red wines in the world.

Appellation: DO Penedès, Spain
Soil: Deep, yellowish grey-brown alluvial soils that are well drained and have a moderate water holding capacity. Made up of interbedded layers of gravel, sand, and clay.

Vintage Report
The 2017 vintage was a dry year overall, especially at the beginning and end of the growth season, with very dry conditions during fruit maturation. The drought brought down overall yields, but the grapes were in excellent condition. Temperatures were generally normal throughout 2017, with the notable exception of the flowering period and early summer, which were both very warm. This fact, along with the drought, brought fruit maturation forward significantly.

Tasting Notes
The Mas la Plana is graceful and balanced despite its firm and dominant tannin profile. Bright crunchy acidity ensures a wine that will develop in the cellar for years to come. This polished red displays hints of its Mediterranean heritage with herbaceous bramble while holding true to brooding currant and loamy earth, reminiscent of old-world Cabernet Sauvignon.
