Ovello is the northernmost vineyard in the village of Barbaresco higher on the sea level and dropping down to theriver in a 300 feet abrupt bluff. It is a relatively large area with a number of subzones with West and East exposure all sharing a similarcalcareous soils rich in clay. The extra clay and the cooler microclimate give the Ovello its exuberant and youthful quality in the fruit and itsfuller body which defines its distinctive personality. Explosive fruit on the palate and firm sometime rough tannins on the finish these winesalways bring a lot of joy to the palate and deliver powerful structure that needs some years of bottle ageing to balance out. Domizio Cavazzahad vineyards in Ovello (and Pora) when he started producing Barbaresco in 1894. It was also among the first 5 vineyards produced as singlevineyard by Produttori in 1967.

The compelling 2021 Ovello Riserva from Produttori del Barbaresco opens with captivating aromas of dark culinary spice, underbrush, rose and mentholated notes. Delicious and full-bodied, the palate doles out ripe Marasca cherry, cranberry, star anise and ground clove. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello shows greater richness and structure on the mid-palate, with ripe and supple flavors of red and purple fruit that give the wine an especially generous personality. This is a concentrated expression of Nebbiolo, yet it remains direct, sharp and beautifully focused, fully living up to the reputation of this highly collectible vintage. The added depth of fruit is balanced by freshness, creating a wine that is both powerful and elegantly composed. Fully saturated red. Luscious raspberry, kirsch even, blood orange, tangerine peel, and minerals on the vibrant nose and palate. This big juicy wine is nicely polished and balanced on the long finish. A cooler, clay-rich site that tends to gives its most balanced wines in warmer years, the 2021 Riserva is a very good Ovello bottling indeed, blessed by excellent tension, balance, and juiciness. The long and clean finish only adds to its many charms. Neither as massive as the Produttori’s 2021 Riserva Rabajà and Montefico, nor as lifted and refined as their 2021 Riserva Asili, it offers exceptional balance for a wine from Ovello. In fact, I’d say this is easily the Produttori’s best wine from Ovello in years. Bravo! Drinking window: 2029-2039. (12/5/25)"

Bright and expressive, this red offers black cherry, blackberry and violet flavors, plus a flash of licorice. Mineral and tobacco elements chime in as this builds through the midpalate to the long, energetic finish. Complex and balanced, but give this a few years. Best from 2030 through 2048.
