Priest Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
Priest Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
Technical Notes:
Priest Ranch sources fruit from their high-elevation estate vineyards on the eastern hills of Napa Valley’s Stags Leap District and surrounding AVAs. The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is composed primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon, with small portions of Petite Sirah and Merlot for added depth. Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted before a long, cool maceration to extract color and tannin. The wine is aged in 100% French oak, with a judicious portion of new barrels (about 40%) for 18–20 months, striking a balance between structure and freshness.
Terroir:
Priest Ranch vineyards sit between 850 and 1,600 feet in elevation, where rocky volcanic soils and dramatic diurnal swings shape the character of the fruit. Warm daytime temperatures ensure optimal ripening, while cool nights preserve acidity and aromatic complexity. This rugged hillside terroir produces wines with concentrated flavors, vibrant energy, and firm yet polished tannins.
Tasting Notes:
The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon pours a deep garnet-purple in the glass. Aromas open with blackcurrant, blackberry compote, and plum, layered with espresso, cedar, dried sage, and a touch of graphite. On the palate, it is bold and structured, with ripe black fruit framed by savory spice, cocoa, and hints of vanilla. The tannins are finely grained yet powerful, giving the wine both density and elegance. A long finish of dark fruit and toasted oak lingers, making this an excellent candidate for both early enjoyment and cellar aging over the next 10–12 years.
Serving & Pairing:
Best decanted for an hour if enjoyed young. Pair with grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, or a rich mushroom ragù.
