An alluring, finessed Syrah that leads with equal parts fruit and earth, with juicy cherry and dried rose alongside brown bread, warm soil and apple wood smoke, plus a hint of mesquite ash. Shows freshness on the palate, with a meaty note on the lavender-kissed finish. Supple and harmonious. Drink now through 2030. 1,850 cases made, 360 cases imported.

Entirely destemmed and matured in a combination of used barrels and a small proportion of new oak (6%), the 2023 First Flight is a perfumed and gourmand Syrah that opens with aromas of dark cherries, violet, peony and rose petals, mingled with delicate spicy notes. Medium- to full-bodied, juicy and round, it is supple and seamless, framed by fine-grained tannins, with a licorice-inflected mid-palate that leads to a long, ethereal finish. Despite its modest appellation, this is a particularly accomplished rendition that readers should keep an eye on.

(cask) red robe; elderberry, blackberry fruit, with raspberry in a peppery bouquet that streams along well. The palate is a bit lean, has a cendre-ash style, is vegetal, pinched. The finish brings white pepper. "It's pleasant, not too complicated, will make people happy, enjoy the 2021, and leave 2020 alone," Graeme Bott. Bottling Aug 2022. 12.5% abv
