I just love this wine, thanks to its sheer brightness and energy. The Ar. Pe. Pe. 2019 Valtellina Superiore Grumello Rocca de Piro reveals impeccable balance and a very silky quality, with nuanced delivery of cherry cola, white licorice root and blue mountain flower. The wine evokes a warmer sense as well with mountain meadow and sunshine on slate rock. All of these elements work in harmony and transfer to the palate with soft intensity. Production is 12,850 bottles.

Ar. Pe. Pe. is one of the standout estates of northern Italy. I tasted two beautiful wines from the 2019 vintage that saw warm growing conditions for big aromas and softer tannins. Indeed, I'm told that aging times were slightly reduced as a result to make up for more concentrated fruit. On the books, 2021 and 2016 are stellar vintages, although in this case, I found the two Riservas from 2016 to be less expressive and slightly closed at this time. Ar. Pe. Pe. farms in sandy, acidic soils with little clay but lots of metamorphic rock and granite. The vines are planted from 300 to 600 meters above sea level in these beautiful mountains.

Castel Grumello , owned by the De Piro family in the fourteenth century, is a twin fortress, made up of two separate structures, once joined by a wall overlooking the hill cultivated with Nebbiolo delle Alpi . Hence the name of this wine, the result of the assembly of grapes from the two estate vineyards located in the Grumello area . In years in which the tannins are not very accentuated and suggest a short refinement in large barrels, the Valtellina Superiore Grumello Rocca De Piro DOCG surprises with the speed with which it acquires drinkability. And when it makes its debut on the table, it always presents itself punctually: ready to drink, but also excellent to store in the cellar among the reserves.
