Opening to a light ruby color, the Ar. Pe. Pe. 2021 Rosso di Valtellina has notes of mountain pine, heritage rose with black slate and chalkboard that all converge with elegance. With time, it also offers blossoming fruit, dried cranberry and rose hip tea. This is a terrific entry-level proposition, and I highly recommend you find a bottle (of 45,870 produced).
- 100% Chiavennasca (Nebbiolo)
- 50-100-year-old vines
- Sourced from lower slopes of Sassella and Grumello vineyards at 350-400 meters
- South/east exposure. 110-day maceration on the skins
- Aged 6-12 mo. in 50 -hectoliter untoasted casks
100% Nebbiolo that is fresh and vibrant with fresh cut wild flowers and violets, the calling card rose petals and sour cherries. Texturally elegant tannins allow you to access the wine sooner, as it is intended to enjoying the youthful aspect of Nebbiolo. Using traditional winemaking methods - the grapes are harvested manually even though the vines cling to a rocky slope - Ar Pe Pe has achieved a wine of subtle complexity that speaks to its Alpine roots. Unlike the more famous Nebbiolo appellations of Barolo or Barbaresco, this wine is ready for tonight’s table and would appeal to lovers of Burgundian Pinot. Any edgy tang dissipates with a slight chill and decant, leaving the wine with a gorgeous line of acidity. I need little prodding to crack open this bottle, but for the sake of pairing, it marries beautifully with creamy pasta, gooey cheese, or white meats.
