Acquiring its name from the hand-destemming of the berries literally “one by one”, this is a single proprietary (2.2 hector) vineyard in the Villero cru, in the municipality of Castiglione Falletto. (Therefore outside the municipality of La Morra) It is one of the most historical and prestigious hillsides of Barolo appellation. The vineyard is differentiated by calcareous and micronutrient-rich soil. Particularly compact clay, elevated average age vines and southern exposure at an altitude of 300 meters above sea level results in a powerful, complex wine.

The 2022 Barolo Unoperuno offers up sweet red-toned fruit, sweet spice, mint, blood orange and new leather, showing all the natural richness of the year. Ripeness is pushed forward, and yet all the elements are so well balanced. The blend of vineyard sites works well in tempering some of the more exuberant qualities of 2022. The Unoperuno is the most overtly ripe of the Altare wines. Most of the fruit is from Cannubi, Cerretta and Arborina, with smaller bits from Sorano and Bricco.

Little by little, Silvia Altare continues to grow her family's estate. She recently acquired a parcel in Sorano that is currently used in the straight Barolo. Altare describes 2022 as a year with a very short flowering but an overall cycle from flowering to harvest of 130 days, a standard measure for a normal year. Yields were down about 20% across the board because of heat and dehydration. The 2022s saw seven to ten days on skins, Malolactic fermentation was done in stainless steel, as is the norm here, except for the Unoperuno, which is done entirely in barrique. All the Barolos were aged in French oak barrels. In tasting, the wines show terrific depth, always in the intense, fruit-forward style that is such a signature of the house.

The Elio Altare 2022 Barolo Unoperuno is a special wine from Elio and his daughter Silvia Altare. "Unoperuno" means “one by one” and refers to the meticulous grape-by-grape sorting that defines this wine's production. It shows that same sweet side seen across this set of new releases, reflecting the warm and dry vintage, but the wine has added complexity and depth that come from the extra attention and workmanship afforded to it. It comes bursting out of the gate, which is rare for Barolo, and that immediacy is one of the main advantages of the vintage.
