The 2022 Barolo Arborina is laced with crushed flowers, vibrant red-toned fruit, mint, white pepper, orange peel and dried herbs. In 2022, the Arborina is a bit more explosively fruity than it usually is, and yet all the elements are very nicely put together. High-toned aromatics are evident. Most notably, the biting tannins that are typical of this site have been tempered somewhat, making the 2022 a relatively accessible young Barolo in this range.

Little by little, Silvia Altare continues to grow her family's estate. She recently acquired a parcel in Sorano that is currently used in the straight Barolo. Altare describes 2022 as a year with a very short flowering but an overall cycle from flowering to harvest of 130 days, a standard measure for a normal year. Yields were down about 20% across the board because of heat and dehydration. The 2022s saw seven to ten days on skins, Malolactic fermentation was done in stainless steel, as is the norm here, except for the Unoperuno, which is done entirely in barrique. All the Barolos were aged in French oak barrels. In tasting, the wines show terrific depth, always in the intense, fruit-forward style that is such a signature of the house.

The Elio Altare 2022 Barolo Arborina needs a few moments to open and shed some of the reduction in the bottle, reflecting the structured nature of this site in La Morra. The wine takes a whole other turn on the palate, where it is exceptionally fruit-forward and bright with balanced power, and a 15% alcohol content that drives some of that muscle. That said, this is a hot and dry vintage, so all these bold excesses are to be expected, but this estate handles them with grace.
