The 2023 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru seems to have a different aromatic profile from the other Premier Crus. More introverted at first with darker fruit as well as sea cave and light loamy scents, it takes time to cohere in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip. It is structured with good tension yet more backward and less giving than, say, Champans or Taillepieds at the moment. This is the one cuvée I would cellar for several years before broaching. - By Neal Martin on November 2024

Aromas of dark berries cassis and cherries mingled with spices and orange rind in a complex bouquet introduce the 2023 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs, a medium to full-bodied, complete wine that in some respects represents the synthesis of the d'Angerville premiers crus—the finesse and perfume of Caillerets, the layers of Taillepieds and the structure of Champans, united in a whole that's more than the sum of its parts. – William Kelley, Jan 30, 2025

Bright mid purple. Immediate distinction and discretion, impeccably balanced. Alpine strawberry, finesse with intensity, picked at impeccable ripeness, the last red to be picked, on 9th September, but it has held out thanks to underground springs. Everything exactly where anybody would want it and stays in the mouth for so long. Drink from 2033-2045. Tasted Nov 2024.
The 2023 Volnay 1er Cru “Clos des Ducs” stands as the crown jewel of Domaine Marquis d’Angerville, a monopole vineyard that has defined the identity and legacy of the estate for over two centuries. Planted on a steep, mid-slope parcel directly behind the family home, Clos des Ducs consistently produces one of Burgundy’s most profound expressions of Pinot Noir — a wine of power, poise, and haunting precision. In 2023, Guillaume d’Angerville has crafted a Clos des Ducs of remarkable purity and lift, combining classic structure with a striking sense of grace.

Terroir
The Clos des Ducs occupies a privileged mid-slope position at the northern end of Volnay, with perfect southeast exposure and exceptional drainage. Its thin limestone soils and high proportion of stones produce wines of great transparency, aromatic lift, and firm mineral backbone. Every vintage, this vineyard yields wines that reflect the essence of Volnay — silky, tensile, and profoundly complex.
Tasting Notes
The 2023 vintage opens with ethereal aromas of red currant, rose petal, crushed rock, and wild herbs, evolving with air toward notes of cherry, blood orange, and subtle spice. The palate is precise, layered, and tightly coiled, showing flavors of red and black fruits, graphite, and savory minerality framed by ultra-fine tannins. The finish is long, saline, and hauntingly pure, hinting at the decades of evolution to come.
Domaine Marquis d’Angerville’s Clos des Ducs 2023 is a Grand Cru in all but name — a wine of quiet power, incredible focus, and timeless elegance. It captures the very soul of Volnay, balancing beauty and intensity in perfect harmony. Built for the cellar but irresistible in its youth, this is one of Burgundy’s truly great single-vineyard expressions, and a defining wine of the 2023 vintage.
