The 2023 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has a delineated, intricate bouquet that opens beautifully in the glass. It is surprisingly mineral-driven given the warmth of the season, with the terroir really coming through. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly edgier tannins compared to the Taillepieds. This finely crafted, quite sapid Champans is fresh with a little more salinity, particularly toward the finish.  - By Neal Martin on November 2024

Even in this more charming vintage, the 2023 Volnay 1er Cru Champans is the most structured wine in the range, opening up to reveal notes of cherries, berries and peonies, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and broad-shouldered palate built around sweet, powdery tannins. It will reward a bit of patience.  – William Kelley, Jan 30, 2025

Bright mid purple. This is stricter on the nose, less ripe at first but with the same rich deep raspberry fruit emerges behind, with an extra burst in the middle of the palate and a slightly more austere finish. Plenty to enjoy here and really very persistent Drink from 2033-2040. Tasted Nov 2024

The 2023 Volnay 1er Cru “Champans” from Domaine Marquis d’Angerville is a masterful expression of this historic premier cru — a wine that perfectly captures Volnay’s seamless blend of grace, depth, and structure. Long considered one of the estate’s signature bottlings, Champans lies mid-slope below Clos des Ducs, producing some of the most complete and age-worthy wines in the appellation. The 2023 vintage, marked by balance and purity, highlights the domaine’s hallmark restraint and finesse.

  • Farming: Certified organic and biodynamic since 2006; hand-harvested and sorted with extreme care

  • Alcohol: ~13% ABV

Terroir
“Champans” derives from the old French champ pendre (“sloping field”), a reference to its gently inclined, mid-slope location — ideal for drainage and exposure. The thin limestone soils and moderate clay content yield wines of sensual texture and vertical energy, consistently bridging the silkiness of upper-slope Volnay and the density of lower-slope Pommard.

Tasting Notes
The 2023 Champans displays aromas of black cherry, wild raspberry, rose petal, and warm earth, intertwined with notes of spice and fine-grained oak. The palate is supple yet powerful, with layers of red and black fruit, crushed stone, and savory herbs, supported by precise acidity and firm but polished tannins. It finishes with remarkable length and tension, promising decades of graceful evolution.

Domaine Marquis d’Angerville’s Volnay 1er Cru “Champans” 2023 is a vintage of exceptional harmony and depth, showcasing the full character of this noble terroir. Combining Volnay’s signature perfume and texture with the structure for long aging, it stands as one of the domaine’s most complete and collectible wines. A must for lovers of classical, terroir-driven Burgundy.
