The 2021 Barolo Monvigliero is one of the best wines we have tasted from Fratelli Alessandria in some time. The aromatics alone are haunting in their beauty. Rose petal, tangerine peel, cinnamon, kirsch, pomegranate and mint explode from the glass. Beams of supporting tannin give the wine its vertical build. This is such a promising Barolo. It could very well turn out to be one of the wines of the vintage.

Fratelli Alessandria started bottling Monvigliero back in 1978. The 2021 Barolo Monvigliero (with 7,000 bottles released) is a wine of extreme elegance and grace. It shows wild berry, redcurrant, lilac and light spice. Fruit comes from a 1.4-hectare plot with south and southwest exposures on silty limestone soils. There is a pretty note of floral sweetness over polished tannins that makes for a lasting impression.

Because of the fame of the wines produced and its history, Monvigliero can be considered the real “grand cru” of Verduno. The position occupied is to the north-east of the village. The hill is exposed to the south, with the vineyards taking the shape of a natural amphitheater, at an altitude of about 300 meters. The soil in this area is rather loose, consisting of fine white marl. Alessandria's parcel is 1.4ha, exposures are South to Southwest, with a high average vine age of 45 years.
