With 12.5% alcohol, Moreau-Naudet’s 2023 Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre is another success this year, soaring from the glass with a bouquet of beeswax, honeysuckle and crisp orchard fruit. Matured in a combination of old wood (30%) and tank, it’s medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated yet with good tension and structured around racy acids, with ample chalky extract and a long, sapid finish. It derives from a parcel just next to Raveneau’s. - Reviewed by: Kristaps Karklins
From a one-hectare parcel of 55-year-old vines, Moreau-Naudet's Montée de Tonnerre is consistently their most mineral driven wine. The soils are sandy with a rocky topsoil and rich in Kimmeridgian limestone. Thin, clayey surface on top of the famous Kimmeridgian marls moderate the cooler nature of the site. South-west orientation. 1.6 acres plot on the lieu-dit “Côte de Bréchain”.
Winemaking: Fermented entirely in steel. Aged 24 months 1/3 in 1 year-old 600 liters French oak barrels and in 400 liters 1 year-old French oak barrels, and 2/3 in thermo-regulated stainless steel tanks. Barrels are shaped with hot water.
