Pisgah the following year, establishing a reputation for their site through partnerships with several iconic producers in the decades that followed. The farm is now managed by their son Dustin, who continues the legacy of quality and precision and has taken the vineyard’s 92 planted acres from strength to strength over the last 15 years. When I as offered time equity to work with an acre of the centrally positioned “Heritage” block, a 2001 planting, I accepted without hesitation. The dense canopy and powerful vigor in this part of the site is obvious, and produces wines with regal structure, exceptional throughput, and profound togetherness.

September saw a heat spike around the time many vineyards were nearing full maturity, pushing sugars along quite rapidly near the finish line of the season. Not so in the Heritage block, where vine age, broad canopy, and powerful skins kept the chemistries in perfect check until just after the Fall equinox. Harvested before sunlight, the fruit stayed cool for nearly 7 days before active fermentation took a strong turn. After twenty days on skins, we pressed the lot with a small carbonic experiment of the same block, and finished sugars off skins for another 7 days. Barrel aging lasted just over 14 months, with this bottling coming from a selection of only three barrels, one new. Bristling red fruits, incredible lift and spiced characters framing the intense and lively core. The palate is especially broad and mouth coating, but the fresh fruits and strong movement keep this wine friendly and serious at the same time. A joy to smell and a journey to taste.

70 cases and 12 magnums produced

13.3% alcohol
