Nicola and Stefania Oberto are slowly putting Berri on the map. Silky, aromatic and creamy on the palate, the 2021 Barolo Berri is striking in its beauty. Crushed flowers, sweet red-toned fruit, chalk, mint and white pepper all meld together effortlessly. Silky, polished tannins frame the finish. The 2021 doesn't have the immediacy of the 2020, but it may catch up to it one day because of its energy. It is a superb young Barolo—that much is clear. About 30% of wine saw submerged cap maceration. Time in cask was 25 months. - By Antonio Galloni on January 2025
Nicola Oberto and Stefania Drocco exude all the enthusiasm and passion of the younger generation in Piedmont. That comes through in wines that are increasingly pedigreed. Two thousand twenty-one was not without its challenges here. Frost wiped out 50% of the production in Rocche dell’Annunziata. As for the wines, they are positively stellar. The Nebbiolo harvest took place from October 6 to 21, on the later side for the year. Readers who have not discovered these wines owe it to themselves to do so. Not only are the wines brilliant, they also remain very fairly priced.
WINEMAKING: vinification of grapes coming from La Morra, mostly MGA Berri and MGA Capalot (until 2017 vintage). Alcoholic fermentation happens in concrete and lasts around 12-14 days, followed by a 6-7 day post- fermentative maceration. Total skin-juice contact is around 3 weeks. Then malolactic takes place in oak and the wine ages for around 20 months in 52-hl and 25-hl oak barrels crafted by Garbellotto. After aging, the wine rests for some months in concrete, steel and plastic, before being bottled, usually in July-August of the year before the release.
While this Trediberri Barolo is usually a blend of different vineyards as it has always tried to represent the typical character of La Morra, the furthest west and highest in altitude villages in Barolo, its is not the case in 2019. The majority of the fruit is from theBerri Cru, with only about 4% from the Torriglione Cru. This still maintains the La Morra style of wine known for their drinkability and finesse. Think of it as a rare bonus to be a one-off single vineyard from a master in the making!
