Composition Blanc de Blancs NV (Base 2019)
Les Mesnil-sur-Oger, Champagne
‘Composition’ is made from parcels with the village of Les Mesnil as well, but from those that are further outside the village and not a hop-skip-jump away from Clos du Mesnil. While 'Monochrome’ is typically a single vintage dominant wine from a few sites, the Composition, as its name suggests, is of several vintages and relies more on reserve wines while at its core is also a base wine of 2018. Dosage here is even lower at just 1 gram - and the wine is even racier than the Monochrome. Made similarly with a long, cold, and slow fermentation in stainless steel for 10 weeks and full malolactic fermentation and lee aging in bottle for 24 months. Also hand riddled, disgorgement is done by hand “à la volée” as well.
My Tasting Note
Color-wise we are identical, crystalline light straw/gold with a frothy and heady mousse of very tiny and persistent bubbles. The nose is fresh, precise, tense and filigreed. The aromatics are chalky mineral, citrus lemon fruit and fresh zest, green apple, white peach, and white florals here too but this leans more chalk and fruit! There is a little less of the creamy edge to the palate, this is racier and more tensile. On the palate the tiny and persistent bubbles and med+ acidity are fresh and energetic. The nose too is confirmed by the med+ flavor intensity. Finishes clean, fresh and med+. Excellent.
