The 2021 Riesling Hyland Vineyard Noble Rot comes from own-rooted vines planted in 1973. Picked on October 8, it's made in the style of a German Auslese "Goldcapsule,” containing about 90% botrytized grapes and 80 grams per liter residual sugar (it has 11.3% alcohol). It's deep and broody on the nose, with candied peach, bruised apple, graham cracker and exotic spice mingling with touches of honey and mushroom. The palate is surprisingly vibrant. It has racy acidity that balances its sugar and energizes its core of spicy fruit and ends with a long, shimmery finish. It's a very drinkable sweet wine that will pair with all types of food—I imagine it with something really sp
