Dark cherry/plum fruit, leather, incense, cloves and mocha portray an especially dense vintage for this bottling, but that is a reflection of an intensely warm, dry year. The Riserva is rather somber, but it is also complex, layered and totally beguiling. It fleshes out beautifully on the finish. Aging was two-thirds in cask and one-third in neutral tonneaux. - By Antonio Galloni, August 2026, Vinous Media

This is a fabulous set of wines from Castello di Monsanto. Together, 2020 and 2021 may very well go down as the greatest back-to-back vintages ever here, and I say that having tasted these wines for more than 30 years, all the way back to the vintages of the early 1960s. The key difference between the two vintages comes down to the central part of the summer. In 2021, conditions were more balanced throughout the entire year. The season started with a good bit of rain that provided water reserves when summer heat arrived. There were no periods of excessive heat, whereas 2020 was quite a bit warmer in the central part of summer, from July through the early part of August. Both seasons saw long harvests that finished on the later side, with good diurnal shifts during the final phase of ripening. The top wines very much align with those parameters; the 2021s show some youthful austerity while the 2020s offer a touch more fruit radiance. As good as the top wines are, readers would be remiss not to check out the Chianti Classico and Chianti Classico Riserva, both of which offer superb quality and value. Kudos to the Bianchi family for this stellar collection of new releases.

93 pts Wine Advocate
Drink Date: 2026 - 2033
A blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo and Colorino, the Castello di Monsanto 2022 Chianti Classico Riserva has a distinctly brambly and savory side, with bay leaf, dried herbs and white pepper alongside dark plummy fruit. The peppery character carries onto the medium- to full-bodied palate, where an interesting green note gives the wine additional savory complexity. There is plenty of personality here, with that recurring bay leaf character marking the finish. First vinified separately in 1962, it is recognized as the first single-vineyard Chianti Classico, and today, fruit goes to the estate's Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. Laura Bianchi leads an estate that continues to invest in its future, including six newly planted hectares of Sangiovese and ongoing sustainability initiatives. The 2022 is lovely; simply textbook. Flinty stone and coriander inflect the gorgeous strawberry nose, expanding with perfumes of jasmine and hibiscus. Tangy rhubarb contributes to the red berry core. Mid-weight, linear and elegant with ample layers of fine suede tannins, it’s vivacious in energy and effortless in flow, and should drink gracefully for a decade at least.

93 pts Wine SpectatorA dark version, sporting blackberry, blueberry, violet and tar flavors, plus a hint of wild rosemary.
